Susan Gast Five Page Special at SBI

Just for you — a five page special from Susan Gast! Why do I offer this?

I find that many SBI-ers get stuck right at the beginning of their journey, not knowing which pages need to be set up to be in compliance with Google (if you're thinking of putting on AdSense, for instance).

Since 2010, I've set up at least a dozen sites at SBI for myself so I know the process. The five pages you need to start your website off on the proper foot are:

  • Your index (home page)
  • Contact Us page
  • Privacy Policy page
  • Disclaimer page
  • Sitemap page
  • Your index (home page)
  • Contact Us page
  • Privacy Policy page
  • Disclaimer page
  • Sitemap page

Each page will have all the important elements that you need. For example, the home page — aka index.html — will contain basic navigation in its header (or above or below it) along with your content pertaining to your site's topic obviously. Your blog page can also be included either at the bottom of the page or in a sidebar.

If you have chosen a one-column responsive template, I know how to create "the look" of "the blog" in a sidebar without having to subject all your site's pages to having to contend with sidebars!

A note about sidebars: With 1- or 2-column responsive designs that have sidebars in their template designs, when your page is viewed on a Smartphone in portrait position, the sidebar and the information it contains, will be placed after your content — not alongside it. It's the way it is. So bear that in mind.

To repeat: I can create the look of a blog sidebar in a one-column fully responsive design leaving the option to put the blog sidebar on which ever subsequent pages you desire. The good news: when your page is viewed in portrait position on the Smartphone, the blog "sidebar" will appear right alongside the content. The bad news: on a Smartphone, portrait position viewing is lacking in visual width as you have do doubt already discovered and it's not easy to read content an inch wide with a sidebar an inch wide right next to it so keep that in mind also. But this is where I come in. I've been through all this. Don't subject yourself to hours and hours of frustration!

Your "Contact Us" page will have a basic form set up for you (by me) saving you the hassle of figuring out how to make the form appear usable on Smartphones.

This includes making the "Thank You" page a bit more "inviting" to visitors. Also, I'll make sure that the autoresponder email (if you want one) is set up. This works in tandem with the "Thank You" on-site web page. I'll also see to it that you get notified at whichever additional email address you want!

Your Privacy Policy page is essential if you're going to have AdSense on your website. Even if you're not going to use AdSense, I strongly advise that the Privacy Policy page is included. It just looks more professional to have a Privacy Policy page, in my humble opinion. This Privacy Policy page will also be linked by me to/with the EU cookie compliance that is required if your viewers have cookies enabled (most do).

The Disclaimer Page is there to protect you. It's pretty generic but covers what visitors can and cannot do with your site's content, plus releases you of damages. I highly recommend having a Disclaimer Page.

I will include a basic Sitemap Page. On it will be the "fabulous five" and your blog page link (if you opt for a blog page). CAUTION: You MUST remember to add NEW pages YOU create to your Sitemap page. It's NOT automatic.

Also, don't forget to add your new pages to your Navigation (if desired). Of course, you only need to put the pages on the Sitemap Page and the Navigation bars that you want visitors to go to.

Many times when I've visited sites, it's frustrating when you can't seem to find what you're looking for ... so straight away I head for the Sitemap (if they have one).

Google loves it, too, if you have a dedicated sitemap page.
